As a busy medical office manager, keeping up with the latest gadgets designed to help you “save time” can actually eat up your spare time. With your work computer, home computer, laptop, phone, PDA, or blackberry, trying to keep up with all your data is a challenge. This is especially true when you need to be able to access the latest versions of your files and all your software applications from multiple locations.
Today’s smart phones offer advanced syncing capabilities. However, you don’t have to invest in one to take advantage of the underlying platform that makes it work – cloud computing. This type of distributed technology makes data transfer from one physical device to another unnecessary. All the information you need exists “in the cloud” and can be accessed from any internet-capable portal.
You Are Already Participating
If you use Flickr to share photos or Gmail to check your inbox, you already use the cloud to manage some of your data. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. With Google Calendar, you can sync meetings and other work-related scheduling with your staff. Google Docs lets you keep your files in a secure online location where you (and any collaborators) can access the latest version at any time.
Other Potential Applications
Software as a Service (SaaS) vendors in the EMR field build their systems on cloud computing and distributed servers. Many HRMS vendors also offer this type of software option for businesses of all sizes to make time & attendance and other employee management tasks more cost effective. An in-depth look at the pros and cons of SaaS for healthcare offices will be the subject of a later blog post.
For now, take a moment to think about all the software applications you use on a daily basis. Can you identify which ones are based on cloud computing? Are you considering moving away from traditionally installed software and further into the cloud?
