Summertime at your Practice

Written by  Annette Herman

Summertime can be a hot and slow time of year for many people around the United States.  A lot of businesses slow down in the summer and the heat can make people feel tired and uncomfortable which can lead to short tempers and very little motivation in a lot of us. Being the practice manager, it is your responsibility to try to keep your practice in a light and happy state so your patients will feel relaxed and confident while visiting their doctor.  Many times in a physicians practice we do not realize  the staff’s attitude and how they interact with the patient has the biggest impact on their overall perspective of their visit.

All of us have been in situations where we are waiting to see the doctor and the people we interact with while we wait can define how the rest of the visit will go. The person behind the desk is usually the first contact anyone makes when entering a doctor’s office and if that person is very short or non-helpful it causes a negative feeling in the patient. If a patient gets a negative feeling while waiting to see the doctor they might not be as open and trusting when speaking to the doctor and this can lead to some very big problems for your practice. Not only does this affect the way they feel about your practice but when someone asks for an opinion on a good doctor your practice will not be the one they will refer to friends or family and they might even specifically name your practice as one to avoid.

So how do we keep our practice in a happy state during the long hot summer months? Maybe you could choose a day to bring in a cool treat at lunch for your staff. Ice Cream or a cool drink on a hot day can help to cool everyone off and let them know that you too are feeling the heat and care enough to do something for them to help the situation. Even little gestures can make a big difference when it comes to staff relations and in turn can make a big difference in the way they interact with the patients. A happy and positive staff will lead to happy and positive patient and that is the way you want everyone to remember your doctor’s practice.

Tell us what do you do to keep your staff in a positive and happy state during the long hot summer months?
